Background:
In the summer of 2005, while pondering my next move as a political campaign operative, I received a phone call from a long time friend. He worked for a local City Councilman who had wanted to know if I would be interested in helping him with his reelection campaign. A light bulb went off in my head, and I realized that I was skilled enough to be a consultant, and could compete just as well--if not better--than those already on the scene.
About a month and a half later, I launched Political Dynamics (see the company website by clicking here).
Before I had to do any sort of marketing, I signed my first client in Ed Barwick, who was running for the 5th District City Council in Long Beach. He didn't win, but in a field of 11 candidates we were able to get a respectable third place through a creative direct mail program.
In December, I decided to market my company for the first time with a series of Christmas cards and emails geared towards the politico--"Re-Elect Santa". It had its own website designed to drive people to our own website, and highlight our skill in political marketing.
After my first run at being an independent consultant, I considered it a success with three candidate clients. One of them won (Laura Doud), one lost close (Ed Barwick, and one dropped out but remained a local favorite (Justin Rudd). Soon though, I realized that I had more to learn about other parts of the business if I would ever succeed in a big way.
