Background:
As a student at George Wasington University in Washington, D.C., I made it a point to intern on Capitol Hill, and to do it for a local Southern California legislator. Ed Royce, as one of the most respected, principled California members, fit the bill.

When I started in the fall of 2001, I was the only intern in the office, with only a staff assistant there to help out with the jobs of the legislative assistents. My second day on the job was 9/11, and then several weeks after that, the Anthrax attacks on the Capitol. The staff assistant soon left, and I was the only intern at a time of unprecedented changes in our government.

I had the opportunity to follow a bill from its conception in the mind of the Congressman, to signing by the President (Radio Free Afghanistan). One of the other opportunities I had to do was discover my skill and enthusiasm for research and writing.

I was soon put in charge of researching the legislation that constituents were most concerned about, and then drafting the form letters that would be sent to them on behalf of the constituents.

Although it was a scary time for the nation, and those who worked in the Capitol, it was a great opportunity to see government at work.
